Blending of Traditions played an important part in the wedding day of Karlen & Stoycho. Since Stoycho and his family are from Bulgaria, Karlen and Stoycho wanted to combine American and Bulgarian wedding traditions.
Bulgarian customs start very early on the morning of the wedding day with negotiations to get the bride by offering bribes through a closed door. Typically the Best man is the negotiator and the Maid of Honor is accepting the bribes. Since giving the bride away was important to Karlen and her parents, we suggested combining the two traditions. Karlen’s parents were inside with Karlen and accepted the bribes through the closed doors. Once the “amount” was met, Karlen’s Dad led her outside to Stoycho. After they danced from the house, Stoycho’s Mom fed them a sweet honeyed cake and wine and wished them a long and sweet life together.
Karlen wore a beautiful lace, tea length gown as she walked on her father’s arm to her future husband. The wedding ceremony was American traditional allowing Karlen’s parents to give their daughter’s hand in marriage to their soon to be son-in-law. After they exchanged rings and Stoycho kissed his bride, guests blew bubbles as the couple exited after the officiant pronounced them Mr. & Mrs.!
As the reception began, Karlen was presented with a bucket of flowers. This Bulgarian tradition “Kicking the bucket" of flowers is said to determine sex of first child. If the white flower falls out first, it will be a girl and red one for a boy. Both flowers came out at the same time…so we’ll have to wait and see! After dinner, the music and the dancing began. Dancing is a large part of the Bulgarian wedding reception ritual. In some parts of the country it is even customary for the bride and groom to dance to receive their wedding cake. Everyone danced and celebrated Karlen & Stoycho’s union…it was an incredibly amazing day!
We were so honored to be a part of such a beautiful day of love and traditions.
